Obituary

Sylval Emanuel Taylor, affectionately called Sly or Syl (depending on when you met him), was the first child of Mrs. Fedrica Monica Dixon-Wynter and Simon Agustus Taylor. He was born on March 27, 1956 at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica and raised in the community of Broad Bell, Dallas, in St. Andrew, Jamaica. He grew up with his siblings Hortense Taylor - Moffatt (Vivine), Louise Shephard -Savage ( Zitta), Shalma Edwards-Turnbull ( Pat), Andrew Edwards (Jack), Jennifer Taylor (Geeny), Desreen Taylor-Bailey (Lena), Marie Taylor-Miller, Louraine Taylor, Delphena Taylor-Hanson (Delly), William Taylor, Ralston Taylor, and Ishmael Taylor ( Jef).
As a child, he attended the Dallas Basic School, the Dallas Primary School and the Canaan Mount Baptist Church Sunday in his community. A bright, pleasant, and helpful child, Sylval was known and loved by members of the Dallas community.
He excelled in school and passed the Common Entrance Examination for Jamaica College (JC); a public secondary school with a reputation for excellence. After graduating from JC, Sylval attended Mico College in Kingston, Jamaica, where he pursued his studies in education and graduated as a qualified teacher. He was the first child from his family to get a college education.
After High School, he married his first wife, Ena Williams and settled in Kintyre, St. Andrew, Jamaica. The union produced two daughters, his first child, Donna Taylor and two years later, Denise Taylor. His third child was another girl, Andrea Taylor - Wong-Shu from Florence Clue. Sylval loved being a dad and would father seven other children over the course of his life: Rosanna Barrett (by marriage), Quanitra Thurston, Sylval Taylor Jr., Seth Taylor, Jasmine Taylor, Chaz Johnson (by marriage) and Syvette Taylor.
As a young teacher in Jamaica, Sylval who was respectfully called “Teacha,” not only taught students at Papine Secondary School, Charlie Smith High and Titchfield High but he also mentored young people in the Kintyre community where he lived and played cricket. In 1980, Sylval Taylor decided to move on from teaching to the hospitality industry. He worked with the Norwegian Cruise Lines and for 5 years was stationed on the ship, going back and forth to Jamaica.
In 1981, he married his second wife Carol (Patsy) Grant. The couple settled in Kendall, South Miami with his daughter (by marriage) Rosanna Barrett. He joined the Kingston-Miami Trading Company shortly after and worked as a salesman then after a few years moved on to Ocho Rios Atlanta International Foods, where he worked for almost 20 years. In his spare time, he was an avid cricketer who played with the Ambassadors cricket team.
In 2011, Sylval married his third wife, Annette Johnson, mother of his last daughter, Syvette Taylor and last son (by marriage), Chaz Johnson. Sylval and Annette lived together in Miramar, Florida until the time of his illness and subsequent passing.
Sylval Emanuel Taylor was a man of tenacity, a family man, a provider, a pleasant man who gave love and who loved life, laughter and cricket. He was a jerk chicken master and bartender extraordinaire; a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, community man and friend
He is survived by his Father: Simon Taylor, his wife Annette Johnson-Taylor, 10 children, 11 grandchildren and 12 brothers and sisters, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends. Smile on in eternity for your next innings, Sylval Emmanuel Taylor.
