Obituary

_The year was 1940, the month December. The day was
called Boxing Day, of the Christmas Season. Sybil Agatha
Marshall was passed into the arms of Vivenne & Kentish
Marshall. She became the fifth child and third girl that
entered the Marshall home in Castle, Priestman’s River,
Portland, Jamaica. The years passed quickly and Sybil,
affectionately known as ‘Gathy’, developed into a graceful
child. She enjoyed the luxuries of two homes and two
mothers; as her cousin, Fredrica Williams, unofficially
adopted Gathy into her home.
Her school days at the Fair Prospect & Boston All-Age Schools
were eventful and exciting, as the family gleaned from the
stories and experiences, she related to them. She always had
a witty response to any adult who dared to criticize her. She
remained dutiful, respectful and helpful in the Marshall
parental home.
Sybil worked at the Mona Rehabilitation Centre for 20 years.
Her loving nature facilitated a natural passion for persons
that were physically challenged. She was loved and respected
by her employer at the Mona Rehab because of her
dedication, charisma and mental alertness.
Sybil was a religious person, with a nurturing heart. She
continued her spiritual journey in the United States,
confident that whatever the denomination, her reward to
righteousness was tied to her personal relationship with her
Lord & Saviour, Jesus Christ. Through Sybil’s optic lens, she
emptied herself to her five children and countless others.
Sybil’s legacy is embodied in the cherished memories of
children Kenneth, Kerith, Dennis (Paul), Jacqueline and
Judith; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; siblings
Silda, Valda, Lawrence & Pam; dear cousins Victoria (Dawn) &
Marsha; close friends Sheree & Sonia; and all other relatives
and friends.

Gathy, the name by which I have known her since I was a child, was a pleasant, considerate, loving and caring person. She would bend backwards to make sure that you are happy and would always be there for you. I will miss seeing her this year at my mother's annual birthday celebration. It will not be the same without her. My mother, Iris Evans will certainly miss her. She is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

When I first met Auntie. Sybil as I affectionately called her, it was love at first sight. She became an instant relative. She immediately gave me a loving name too - Mellow. I truly loved Auntie. Sybil. She was such a warm, loving, genuine , cool as a cucumber, caring, and thoughtful human being. Heaven had truly gained an angel.
Love Mellow.

I have never met someone who is as hardworking as Sybil. When God created Sybil he broke the mould so that there would be no other like her. Always giving and sharing and worrying about others. I will miss our phone conversations and the jokes that never get stale. Judith, you had a wonderful mother who loved you to the moon and back. Gone too soon my friend....SIP. My condolences to the family.
